The chaps at Super Talent are not only incredibly modest, talented and super, but they must also be fantastically tiny to have put together the world's smallest 8GB flash drive. (Flawless logic, I'm sure you'll agree.) Retailing at $35, the price is pretty reasonable, at least until you drop it into your chest hair and lose it forever.

Buying continual replacements is quickly going to create a massively expenses bill, so we say, just stick with this alternative instead. Sure, it may not be miniature and cool, but at least it's big and ugly. If that isn't a selling point, having physical characteristics in common with your flash drive should have you sold.

Reviews are pouring in of the HP 2133 sub-notebook (now dubbed the Mini-Note) which is now up on Amazon. It costs more than the Eee PC or Cloudbook, but you can actually configure all the specs yourself, and the aluminum chassis tells people you spent more on your ultraportable. It's a bit bulkier and heavier, but the screen's higher (1280x768) res means less strained peepers, and its full keyboard is way less crampy than the competition

But the vertical mouse buttons are unnatural and lame. Performance-wise, it runs Vista without a hitch on 3 hours, 20 minutes of juice in high performance mode. Conclusion: If you need more (and Windows) from a sub-notebook, this might be your winner, you're willing to pay for it.

Originally when our eyes beheld this Boratesque laptop under garment, we figured it was only good for a quick chuckle and, if we were lucky, maybe a crude tire tracks reference. But when we read more about this amazing piece of cloth, we learned that it was one loving mother's solution to a child's broken laptop hinge. We're sorry, did we just write "loving mother?" We meant to use the words "spiteful and spawn-hating."

LCD Cutting Board Looks Cool

On paper, this cutting board concept—with an embedded LCD display and wireless connectivity to display cooking recipes—is a great idea. Unfortunately, being an Iron Chef wannabe myself, it fails the basic kitchen test: the crazy-mess-where's-the-damn-pepper-proof test. My cutting board is always full of slices and dices of whatever substances are going to suffer the torture of my pans, which would make impossible to follow any recipe on it, forcing me to follow recipes the traditional way: not following them at all

Wireless Sensor Images in 3D

This 3D sensor helps compose a 3D model, simply by projecting a stripe pattern onto the subject, using the couple of “eyes” to capture slightly distinct angles of the image based on the deducted geometry.

“It consists of two cameras with a projector in the center,” said IOF Optical Systems department head Gunther Notni, PhD. “The two cameras provide a three-dimensional view, rather like two eyes. The projector casts a pattern of stripes on the objects. The geometry of the measured object can be deduced from the deformation of the stripes.”

Fans of crime shows such as “CSI” know that forensic experts often make plaster casts of tire tracks left in soft surfaces for later comparison with the tracks made by suspects’ vehicles. But the Fraunhofer researchers said their method offers a much faster, easier way of creating an image: The battery-powered sensor can be aimed at the tracks in question, its button pressed, and a few seconds later police officers can see a 3-D image of the track on their laptop computer, sent wirelessly by the sensor.

The device also has medical applications, such as providing a 3-D scan of a patient’s face prior to plastic surgery or other procedures.

It was developed at the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering (Fraunhofer IOF) in Jena. The researchers will showcase the sensor at the Control trade fair in Stuttgart, Germany, April 21-25 (Hall 1, Stand 1520).

Sony ICD-UX70 voice recorder

The Sony ICD-UX70 features 1GB of flash memory capable of recording between 12 and 290 hours of MP3 audio, depending on the quality setting. The device uses a single AAA battery and contains a built-in USB connection that makes it easy to quickly connect and offload recorded files to your computer. It’s both Mac and PC compatible, comes in three colors (silver, pink, and red), and doubles as a stereo MP3 player should you wish to use it as a simple digital audio device. The MSRP is $99. There’s also a 2GB version, the ICD-UX80, with an MSRP of $149.

Pros

Recording is easy and the audio files produced are high-quality, provided you set the device down on a table (more on that below). Transferring the files is even easier as Sony has thankfully opted to go the standard USB mass storage route instead of including its own proprietary software. You simply plug the USB end of the recorder into your computer and some folders pop up containing your recordings. Easy.

There’s also a cool auto-record function that will start recording as soon as it detects a sound in the room. It’s great for hiding in a desk drawer and catching all your enemies talking about you, plotting your demise and fighting over who’s going to get to keep your collection of tired-but-still-cool track jackets once you’re gone. A selectable microphone sensitivity switch allows the device to start recording based on a tiny peep or a slightly less tiny peep. I didn’t find much difference between the two but you may, depending on what and where you’re trying to record.

Then there’s the audio quality which, at the end of the day, is most important, right? Well, it’s excellent. Speech is loud and clear without being distorted and the microphone seems to do a great job of adjusting on the fly to volume fluctuations and background noise. Sony’s done a nice job here.

The arrival of Panasonic’s 32GB SDHC Memory Card further strengthens the company’s Pro High Speed line-up and brings the total line to six models, joining those currently available: the 1GB, 2GB, 4GB, 8GB and 16GB card sizes with the Class 6 speed specification. Class 6 cards offer a maximum data transfer speeds up to 20MB/s.

The new card, like all other Panasonic SD and SDHC Memory Cards, is extremely reliable even under severe temperature conditions. Since the cards incorporate an industrial-grade flash memory, they work in temperatures ranging from -13°F to +185°F, while consumer-grade flash memory only guarantees +32°F to +158°F, thus ensuring consistent performance regardless if the user is skiing or snowboarding or if the SD Memory card is left in a hot car.

A massive 32GB of capacity is ideal for AVCHD High Definition video recording, a growing demand thanks to the recent expansion of High Definition SD Camcorders. When used with Panasonic’s newly released High Definition SD camcorder, the HDC-SD9, the 32GB card can record approximately 12 hours of 1440 x 1080i High Definition video in HE mode, and approximately four hours of 1920 x 1080i full High Definition video in HA mode.

3G iPhone coming within 60 days ?

There has been a lot of speculation on when the 3G version of the iPhone would be coming, but today Walt Mossberg appeared to let the cat out of the bag in a video where he states that the 3G iPhone will be released within 60 days. Thanks to The Boy Genius Report for the link.

This news makes sense since the iPhone 2.0 update will be coming in a couple of months as well and the launch of a new device to go along with the new software is a natural assumption. I am pretty happy with my iPhone, but the lack of 3G is a real bummer that results in my using other devices instead of the iPhone to be productive on the road. A 3G iPhone with the new firmware is going to be very tempting and tough for me to resist. However, I will have to see other hardware improvements such as Bluetooth connectivity to a keyboard, A2DP Bluetooth support, and video capture capability before I’ll jump so quickly to buy an iPhone this time.

The video below shows Walt making the statement at 6:53 into the video so you can hear it for yourself. Walt gets Apple products earlier than most everyone else so I believe it when he says 60 days too.

Flip Video Ultra

There’s been a lot of renewed media interest of late in Pure Digital’s Flip Video (aka, The Flip), the super-simple, low-res, flash-based video recorder (with flip-out USB dongle) that has taken the camcorder industry by storm in the year since it was launched. David Pogue reviewed the lastest version a couple of weeks ago, and CNET TV’s Crave video featured it last week. The newest edition, the Flip Ultra, hit the streets last September and comes in 1GB ($149.99) and 2GB ($179.99) versions, which hold up to 30 and 60 minutes respectively of “high-quality” video (Pogue describes it as “not as sharp as a tape camcorder or even digital still cameras, but far superior to cell phone video” and with low-light abilities that “trump even $1,000 camcorders”). The best-selling camcorder on Amazon for at least six months now, the Flip Ultra is simplicity defined, and its success is a tribute to the YouTube generation where higher resolution isn’t always better. Pogue calls the gadget’s 640×480 pixels, 30 frames per second, “TV resolution” but that’s only if you have a standard definition TV like my Trinitron that everyone (including the Verizon FiOS installation guy) makes fun of.

The Philips RC9800i is a very unique remote. Coming from Philips you would expect some good quality; however, based on many customer opinions, the remote is actually not that good. The remote features a very friendly touch-screen interface, an easy set-up, Wi-Fi compatibility, etc, but lacks when it comes to actually working well.

The remote seems to lack compatibility with many electronics. It confuses itself thinking you are watching a DVD when you are actually just watching TV. Its reliability is extremely awful. When it comes to battery power, its reliability is also not good; but, if you don’t forget to charge it nightly, you should be fine.

It becomes even worse when it comes to its customer service. All they do is tell you that the remote won’t work and that you should return it and upgrade it. Not too helpful, huh? Overall, this device is not really worth it for its overpriced price.

The Motorola Talkabout® T5500 radios are great for common use as well as work. This Motorola two way radios usually work in a range of one to two kilometers and have crystal clear reception. They come with rechargeable batteries that can last up to ten hours of usage! Even if the batteries die, you can simply replace them with AA batteries and the radios will work just fine. The only problem with this model, compared to the T4900 and T5620, is that it is too loud. So, in order for the receiver to hear well what you are saying you will have to talk somewhat loud. In essence though, these walkie talkies do their job fine. They are great for family traveling trips to keep the family together!

Magic Mouse

The new mouse is one of the first winners of the 2007 PopSci Invention Awards and it's fair to say that the seniors behind it deserve every bit of the prize. The working principle is this: the mouse ring emits ultrasonic pulses that are picked up by five receivers mounted on (eventually, in) a monitor. Based on the time each receiver hears the pulse, a processor calculates its position in three dimensions relative to the five spots and translates it to a cursor position onscreen.

Just like with the Wiimote, the communication between the two components of the mouse is extremely fast, 100 times a second, which makes the translation of hand movement to cursor instantaneous.

According to Popsci.com, the students aren't shopping the invention around yet, but they're not without upgrade ideas. Cretella would like to add gesture recognition, and King says they could probably shrink the ring by replacing its speaker with a tiny, vibrating device. Cretella perks up and offers that, ideally, the mouse would look like a normal ring. He pauses, as if hesitant to mention the godhead of computer design aloud, and adds, "Maybe even something Apple would be interested in."

I thought that the Wow Pen Eco presented last week would be the new revolution in desktop mice, but I can say for sure that this looks much more promising, even if it could use some retouches. Anyway, if you want to find out more about it and see more images, go pay Popsci.com a visit. I promise you it will be worth your while

Enlarge pictureAsus has just unveiled a new slider phone model, the J502. The phone brings a sum of convenient features that make it capable of answering even to the highest demands.

Worthy of being mentioned, the phone has an appealing design. The lack of curves and rounded corners makes it look more like a masculine phone, although its style is appropriate for women too. The most striking feature about it is definitely the 2.4 inch QVGA display screen which is capable of supporting up to 262k colors and a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels. Even more, the phone is only 14.7 mm thick, which makes it quite easy to handle. One thing that will surely catch the interest of those picture lovers out there is that Asus J502 has a 3 megapixel auto-focus camera with flash light. The memory is quite small, at its 24MB, so the fact that it also supports microSD cards comes as good news. The extra space will be well appreciated, as this phone is capable of handling a wide range of multimedia features.

The MP3 player integrated can support a wide range of sound formats, which might prove useful especially if the memory space has been expanded. Even more, the phone can also render video images at acceptable performances.

One thing that might prove to be useful is that Asus J502 also has a 80,000 words Language English Dictionary. This comes just to make sure that the user will be able to put into words all that he wants to communicate as fast and efficient as possible.

Another interesting feature is that the Asus J502 phone model has data security enabled. This means that the user only has to send an SMS message in order to have the phone shut down itself, call forward, format, or lock. Long distance phone handling proves to be a useful concept especially in the case of emergency situations, when the phone has been forgotten somewhere.

Sony Ericsson Lizy phone model has been seen on very few occasions up to this point. From this reason, the new image that has been going by for the past few days has naturally opened the door for speculations and discussions on the phone's features.

Unfortunately, there is little information available on the Sony Ericsson Lizy phone. Among the few sure things known about it is that it supports Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity. This places it among the cellular models that offer a large amount of information to its users at fast and reliable transfer rates. Moreover, it is a tri-band phone, which supports GSM900/1800/1900 networks. The cell phone follows the path line set by the Sony M600i model when it comes to design. Instead of plastic, it now has a metal case. Even more, it shares the same keypad with the M600 phone model, as to provide QWERTY keyboard on the number buttons. Considering its simple design, this promises to be a considerably practical phone model, that will come as great help for information transfer. Moreover, the Wi-Fi connectivity means that it can easily handle media, by downloading music, images and videos to be later listened or viewed.

Sony Ericsson M610i Lizy also comes equipped with a camera and a series of features that are expected to at least match those of the M600 model. For this reason, the Lizy phone will most probably be 3G enabled and also run on Symbian OS. Media support, such as MP3, video rendering and email are also expected to be provided at high quality. Even more, it is left to see if the TFT touchscreen will also be capable of recognizing handwriting, as it was the case with the other phone model.

Sony Ericsson M610i has just finished FCC testing and has been approved. A date for its release has not been revealed so far.

Apple may be aiming at metalheads with its thin MacBook Air, but Asus is chasing the leather crowd. Asus’s ultralight laptop, the U2E, has black pebbled leather on the top and the palm rest. The refined look is meant to evoke the days when travelers wouldn’t leave home without their leather valises and trunks.

The U2E is lighter than the Air, about 2.7 pounds versus 3, in part because of its smaller screen, about 11 inches versus 13, and a tighter keyboard. The sides aren’t tapered to an edge like those on the Air, because the U2E comes with all of the standard connectors and a DVD-R drive. The square edges make it seem much thicker than the Air, although it is only a quarter-inch fatter.

The U2E costs $1,999 now, but in a few weeks a version with a 32-gigabyte flash drive will go on sale. At $2,699, that will be more expensive, but also 0.66 pound lighter because it sheds the heavy metal of the hard disk drive

Of a 100-feet, people-crushing, metal monster tranforming itself into seemingly impossible shapes can evoke a sense of disbelief and bewilderment. No prizes for guessing what I am referring to! The ‘Transformers’ are back, and this time, they get meaner and BIGGER. Combine Scrapper, Bonecrusher, Scavenger, Mixer, Hook and Long Haul from the Constructicons and you have ‘Devastator‘. If this doesn’t spell enough trouble, the Decepticons will receive help from the Constructicons. In addition to these, you get to see some ‘flesh and blood’ in Chuck - a conspiracy theorist, a U.S. military leader with a funny bone, a U.K. special forces leader, Professor Colan - a professor at Princeton, and Theresa - the lady blessed with beauty, brains and a good sense of humor. Michael Bay is finally back with the sequel to the Transformers. And like they say, it just gets better and better!

Apple’s latest 20″ iMac display (you know the one we mean, with the super thing keyboard) offers to produce an image with millions of colors, yet the Cupertino crew is now being sued, reportedly, because the 20 incher only offers a blasphemous 262,144 true colors. The Texas resident who filed the suit, Chandra Sanders, claims that other colors are “produced through a technological trick of showing several similar shades at high speed.”

Brian Kabateck of LA-based Kabateck Brown Kellner, the represented firm which is suing Apple for the false promises says “beneath Apple’s good-guy image is a corporation that takes advantage of its customers. Our goal is to help those customers who were deceived and make sure Apple tells the truth.” We’d like to point out that the iMac 24″ screen does in fact offer millions of colors, 16.7 million to be exact, of which only 9.7 million can be seen by the human eye. — Andrew Dobrow

These two were no secret, but Alienware hosted a press event this morning to finally confirm its Area-51 m15x and m17x laptops. While Alienware design is still a bit of a love it or hate it affair, it's clear that some thought has gone into these two, and there's finally an option to get replace the standard Alienware ribbing on the lid for smooth one. The m17x is obviously the primary powerhouse here, configurable with dual NVIDIA GeForce 8800M GTX graphics cards, a Blu-ray burner, Core 2 Extreme processor, dual hard drives and a 1080p 17-inch LCD. Special Alienware touches include LEDs galore -- the keyboard, sides and lid all can be lit up in your choice of color, selected by software. Alienware is also tossing in a hot-swappable drive bay for swapping in a third hard drive or extra optical drive. The m15x is of course is doing its darnedest to pack this kind of gaming power into a 15-inch form factor, but the surprising thing is that it nearly does. The laptop runs a single 8800M GTX card, includes a hot swap bay to boost storage or add an extra battery, and includes all those lighting doohickies of its big brother. We're pretty impressed with the size and form factors, and while we can't quite get into Alienware's design taste, it's certainly a step in the right direction.
